Variable Data Print
Variable-data printing (VDP) is a form of digital printing in which elements such as text, graphics and images may be changed from one printed piece to the next, without stopping or slowing down the printing process using information from a database or external file. VDP is a key benefit of digital printing, which uses computer databases and digital printing to create high-quality, full color labels.
Variable data printing enables the mass customization of documents via digital print technology, as opposed to the 'mass-production' of a single document using offset lithography. Instead of producing 10,000 copies of a single document, delivering a single message to 10,000 customers, variable data printing could print 10,000 unique documents with customized messages for each customer. The ability to create a range of specific personalized labels from a database can create an increased appeal to and intimacy with the end product user. This is shown in increased response, loyalty and sales rates.
Variable data printing and brand security
Variable data printing can also take brand security to the next level, virtually any element from the printed piece can be varied. Here are three ways in which variable print can protect your brand:
Variable Print numbering - Serialised data and sequential numbering is a widely used technique and can be utilised for both tracking and authentication purposes. This can be easily added to your design pre-press and will result in very little additional cost. By using multiple colors or by knocking this variable code out of your CMYK design you can make it increasing hard for counterfeiters to recreate your product.
Variable Images and Illustrations - You can also vary the images or illustrations in a design using variable data printing. This can be used to create unique changes to images or to create cryptoglyphs on your brand design. A cryptoglyph is a series of printed dots positioned on the label in such a way that can only be recognised or authenticated using a digital scanner and specific software. Using the 1200 dpi of the Xeikon digital press we employ here at ORIENT Quality Print you can even create undetectable Micro-Dots of about 20 microns!
Variable Barcodes and QR codes - Barcodes and QR codes are industry standard codes used for all kinds of authentication and tracking applications. Using Variable data printing you can now issue a unique code to each product packaging you create, making it harder to slip counterfeit products into the market place.
